Red knot (Calidris canutus), flying in from their feeding grounds on The Wash estuary, to their high tide roosting area on one of the lagoons at RSPB Snettisham, UK. I particularly like the way the small group of black-headed gulls (apart from one!) struggle to swiftly exit their roost, as it is suddenly inundated by several thousand Knot. Starlings : murmuration to roost : RSPB Otmoor [2023]

Sand martin : breezy perch : RSPB Frampton Marsh

Normally quite tricky to film, these sand martins (Riparia riparia, also known as Bank swallows) made it a lot easier for me, by hovering in the moderate breeze, next to a metal rod/pipe on which one or two of them also attempted to land. Others seemed to be happy just to hover adjacent to the perching spot. Location: RSPB Frampton Marsh (360 hide). Lincolnshire, UK Date: 07 Aug 2023 (late afte...

    • @robcaddphotography

In this clip, little sound is produced the first five times that the bill is opened (it varies, might be less or more) - this is sometimes termed the 'pumping' phase and is where the bird is taking in air in readiness for the next phase. The main, very low-frequency, 'boom' sound is then heard; in this clip, it's when (or slightly after) the bill is opened for the sixth time, and then again for the next three openings. As to why you can't hear anything - that could be for a number of reasons, eg.: 1. the sound may've gone out of sync with the image, perhaps due to some local internet or wifi issue (I usually resolve this by restarting the app, or sometimes restarting the viewing device). 2. Most often though, the reason is that the small speakers on certain devices just cannot reproduce the low-frequency sounds that these birds produce (or the sound settings on the device are set so that low-frequency sounds are filtered out). There may be other reasons too; all I can say is that the sound is still on the clip - I've definitely not deleted anything! :) Thanks for watching the video! I hope you do manage to eventually hear the booming!

I really enjoyed watching this - thank you for sharing it. I would love to see these birds. I have only been to Gallows Bridge a couple of times with a Bridge Camera - and felt intimidated (all self inflicted I might add) by the size of the zooms and Tripods in the Hide. I now am fully equipped with a Zoom and Tripod and have enough experience to take another trip to that Hide. How wonderful that you were able to witness such an incredible wildlife moment.
